About Beacon Nation

Welcome to Beacon Nation!

The Beacon Nation project, funded by the Hawai‘i Island Beacon Community, promotes innovation in health IT by gathering and disseminating lessons learned from the 17 Beacon Communities about building and strengthening health IT infrastructure, testing innovative approaches, and making strides toward better care, better health, and lower costs.

The Beacon Community Program demonstrates how health IT investments and Meaningful Use of electronic health records (EHR) advance the vision of patient-centered care, while achieving the three-part aim of better health, better care and lower cost. The HHS Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT (ONC) provided $250 million over three years to 17 selected communities throughout the United States. These communities have already made inroads in the adoption of secure, private, and accurate systems of EHR adoption and the expansion of health information exchange. Each of the 17 Beacon Communities is building and strengthening local health IT infrastructure, testing innovative approaches for using connected technology to improve care delivery and making measurable improvements that benefit both individual and population health. Through these efforts, the Beacon Communities have developed models of change that can instruct the work of other cities, counties and regions. As the nation transforms the way it pays for health care, the Beacon Community Program’s achievements will help show all communities how to meet the challenge and succeed.

The Beacon Nation project is converting the experiences and lessons learned from the Beacon Communities into actionable information about specific technology-enabled solutions that can be adapted for use by interested communities. This information is included in Learning Guides that, once complete, will be available to the public on this site. Learning Guides are a common set of materials describing a promising IT-enabled intervention that can be deployed in a community to accelerate change.

In addition to making Learning Guides available to the national health care community, the Beacon Nation continues to identify and engage Innovation Partners who will implement and support the Learning Guides to achieve the health care goals put forward by local leaders. Once a part of the Beacon Nation, Innovation Partners will form a learning network with existing Beacon Communities and each other to share best practices and support the implementation of the Learning Guides. On this site, you will find the Learning Guides in their entirety as they become available, as well as information about the project, the Learning Guides, Innovation Partners, and individuals and organizations that have supported the development and dissemination of the Learning Guides, making the Beacon Nation project possible.
